Lebanese fried potatoes with cilantro and garlic – Batata Harra
Crispy fried potatoes with fresh cilantro and some garlic goodness. The potatoes are flavorsome and have a little kick thanks to the chili flakes, hence the name “Batata Harra” that is literally translated as “spicy potatoes”. This potato dish is popular throughout the Middle East and is very simple to make with only 5 ingredients!
The Lebanese cilantro potatoes represent a tasty side dish for many meals like my homemade kebab or hummus. Served together with a salad you get yourself an amazing lunch or dinner!
There are two ways to cook these delicious potatoes: either deep-fried or roasted. Although, traditionally, potato cubes are deep-fried, many people also prefer to roast the potatoes. Out of these two methods I prefer the fried potatoes one, so that’s the recipe that I’ll share today!
Enjoy!
Lebanese potatoes with cilantro - Batata Harra
Crispy fried potatoes with fresh cilantro and some garlic goodness. The potatoes are flavorsome and have a little kick thanks to the chili flakes, hence the name “Batata Harra” that is literally translated as "spicy potatoes".
Ingredients
- 5 potatoes (900 gr), cut into 1 cm cubes (≈ half inch)
- 4 big garlic cloves, minced
- 1 bunch cilantro (about 25 gr) + a bit more for garnish, finely chopped
- ½ tsp chili flakes
- Squeeze of lemon juice
- Salt/pepper
Instructions
- Pat dry the potatoes (see note).
- Heat (sunflower)oil in a large pan over medium/high heat.
- Add the potatoes to the pan and pan fry until golden/brown and cooked through, about 20 minutes. Remove from oil.
- Now, fry the garlic until slightly golden.
- Add chili and fresh cilantro, give it a quick stir.
- Then add the fried potatoes and stir until the potatoes are well coated. Season with salt and pepper.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
- Enjoy!
Notes
You can choose to boil the potato cubes a couple of minutes prior to deep frying them, to make the process go a bit quicker.
